Born 4th June 1917 in Exning [Newmarket 3b:688], the son of Arthur J. and Ada Ethel HOWE (née CHALLICE).

He never knew his father Arthur James Charles HOWE who was killed in France on 22nd November, 1917. His mother married Thomas AKERMAN in 1921.

in the 1939 register, at 4 Burwell Road, Exning were Arthur; his stepfather Thomas H AKERMAN [17-2-1891] racehorse studman; his mother Ada E [29-1-1897]; half brother Frederick J AKERMAN [23-5-1924] baker's roundsman assistant. There are 2 closed records.



Arthur William was a racehorse studman, living with his mother at 4 Durham Cottages, Exning (from his Japanese PoW card).


Arthur junior was captured on 15th February 1942, the day of the surrender to the Japanese. He died of beri-beri in Thailand, whilst a prisoner of war of the Japanese. Buried originally in Sonkrai Cemetery, he was moved to Thanbuyzayat in December 1945.
